Hunting Gear

Gear list for Moose, Sheep and Bear hunts. Find Info on popular rifle calibers, optics, boots, backpacks, and more.

Sheep Hunting Gear List

Rifle - There are many acceptable rifle calibers: the 300 magnums, 30/06 and 338 are good all-purpose Alaskan hunting calibers. The 270 and similar are good for sheep and caribou, but for moose and bear you’ll want something in the range of 30/06 or larger. Bring at least two boxes of ammo. Handguns are not allowed on our hunts.

Sleeping Bag & Therma-Rest Mattress - Synthetic bags of compact size are best. It should be comfortable down to 10 degrees. A bivy sack may provide added warmth.

Hunting Boots - Quality leather boots that have been broken in are best with several pair of heavy wool socks. Tall boots provide added support and help keep feet dry while crossing small streams.

Trousers - One medium weight wool and one or two heavy cotton. They should be loose fitting.

Shirts & Long Johns - There are many options for clothing. Choose clothing that is fast drying and lightweight. Wool is fine and there are many choices of synthetic fabrics. Moisture wicking and fast drying synthetic long johns are best, (polypropylene, polyolefin, etc).

Over-boots / waders - though rubber hip boots are not necessary, it is good to have lightweight slip-over type waders for creek crossings. Wiggy Waders and Neos work well.

Raingear - Rain gear should be lightweight and QUIET.  Two piece loose fitting and top quality. Frogg Toggs are good for sheep hunts.

Backpack - A pack big enough for extra clothes, raingear and sleeping bag. A large size top quality frame pack is necessary for sheep hunts.

Misc. Items - You’ll also want a headlamp, gloves, hat, binoculars, camera, light camp shoes and other personal items. It is best to think in terms of layers when choosing how to dress. Gray, brown, green or camo are the choice colors. Orange and red are not good. Baggage should be packed in a couple of smaller duffel bags rather than one large one and limited to 60 lbs. that they can be carried in the bush planes. However, if you are unsure of what to bring, we can leave any unnecessary items. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about what to bring. TRAVEL LIGHT!

Hunting gear

It is not necessary to buy lots of new expensive gear for your hunting trip to Alaska. However, it doesn’t pay to scrimp on some things. A few pairs of good socks might add more to the enjoyment of your hunt than a new rifle. I would prefer to see someone come with their trusty 30/06 that he has carried for may seasons rather than a brand new .338 that he is not familiar with. If you want to treat yourself, consider a new pair of top quality light weight binoculars. There will be many interesting things to view through them. The most important thing you can do to increase your enjoyment and improve your chances of success is to be as physically fit as possible. However, we can accommodate most people with physical problems. Please give us a good assessment of your physical abilities and handicaps or medical problems if any, so that we can plan your hunting trip accordingly. Client weight is limited to 260 Pounds.
